We have, at last, reached the longest day of the year, the day that the sun reaches its zenith in the northern sky and, sadly, begins its journey back southwards again on the way to the short days of winter. In the Old English and Pagan calendars, this is Lithe and the month of Forelithe gives way to Afterlithe and the second half of the year.

Here is the sun’s position on the analemma:

Three days before the summer solstice, today marks the day of earliest sunrise in the north-east of Scotland. In Aberdeen, it rose at 04:11 this morning and will soon start to rise later each morning. The date of latest sunset will be the 25th June, when it will set at 22:09 and then begin to set earlier each evening.

Lowest Full Moon

Today is the day of the lowest full moon for 18 years as the moon reaches Major Standstill in its 18-year Saros cycle. Unfortunately, unlike the Milk Full Moon, this one was not very easy to see as it was very cloudy and foggy, so I don’t have any pictures, and a major event in the lunar calendar has passed by.
