Warm Weather
Di Luain, 30 An Dàmhair 2006

 8 Blotmonth 1562
 8 Blood/Eadràn
 164.7.13.8

The warm weather is continuing. Apparently the maximum in Newcastle today will be 18 degrees Celsius. We had a lovely walk yesterday at Whitburn beach, near Sunderland, and it was like a summer’s day. The only difference being that the sun was lower and set very early due to the clocks going back to GMT.

Welcome to Eadrán/Blood Moon/Blotmonth
Di Luain, 23 An Dàmhair 2006

 1 Blotmonth 1562
 1 Blood/Eadràn
 164.7.13.1

Once again, the lunar and solar months begin on the same date this month, with the month of blood and gore coming upon us. In the Saxon calendar, it is called Blotmonað, and was the time to sacrifice animals in order to please the gods and avert a bad winter, or possibly to store up the meat for the winter months. It is a leap year in this year’s Celtic calendar and the intercalary month of Eadràn begins today.

Happy Diwali

 29 Hunter’s/Cadal

Today it is Diwali, the Hindu lunar new year celebration. The name refers to the practice of displaying lights of many colours, and there are many traditions that Diwali is said to signify. It marks the coming of the dark days of the year and often coincides with the Celtic new year and the ancient lunar month of Samhain (pronounced “Sow-in”). These festivals, in my opinion, have links with Halloween and possibly even Christmas, being occasions to mark the dark times of the year with celebrations, feasting and the displaying of lights and colourful clothing and decorations.
