Oìdhche Shamhna (pronounced eech-uh hown-uh) is “Samhain’s Eve”, and is the last day of the Celtic lunar calendar. Tomorrow will be the first day of the tenth year of the current lunar cycle, the month of Samhain (pronounced Sow-in).

Today is Diwali, or Deepavali, from the Hindu and Sikh lunar calendars. It occurs on new moon usually in either late October or early November. As such it is often celebrated along with Halloween and, in the United Kingdom, Guy Fawkes Night. The this is the last month of the Celtic calendar. In the Gaulish calendar it is Kantlos, and in the Anglo-Saxon calendar it is the Hunter’s Moon. The month begins with Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Islamic month of fasting, Ramadan. In the Hebrew calendar it is the month of Tishrei, the first in the new Jewish year of 5769. This is a most important time in the Hebrew year, with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, on the 10th.
